Portland International Airport (PDX) is setting new standards in sustainable architecture with its latest expansion. Designed by ZGF Architects, the ambitious project features a massive timber roof covering 9 acres (3.6 hectares), marking a significant milestone in eco-friendly construction. This innovative design not only enhances the airport’s aesthetic appeal but also sets a precedent for future projects in the USA.
The centerpiece of the PDX expansion is the colossal timber roof, weighing an impressive 18 million pounds (approximately 8 million kg). Constructed using glulam (glued-laminated timber) and other locally sourced wood within a 300-mile (482-km) radius, the roof showcases a commitment to sustainability. Prefabricated in a factory to minimize disruption, the roof was meticulously positioned atop the new terminal, which consolidates nine buildings into a cohesive, modern space.
Given its location within the Cascadia subduction zone, the new terminal at PDX is engineered to endure seismic events of up to magnitude 9. The roof is supported by 34 Y-shaped columns, each equipped with seismic isolation bearings that allow the structure to move laterally by up to 24 inches (61 cm) during an earthquake. This innovative design ensures both safety and longevity, making PDX one of the most resilient airports in the world.
The expansion goes beyond just structural innovation. In collaboration with Place Landscape Architecture, the interior design aims to create a serene and inviting atmosphere for travelers. The terminal features 72 large trees, cascading gardens, and over 5,000 strategically placed plants, all intended to mimic Portland’s pedestrian-friendly, tree-lined streets. This focus on biophilic design not only enhances the visual appeal but also contributes to a calming environment for passengers.
Part of a larger $2 billion renovation, the PDX expansion is expected to double the airport’s capacity, accommodating up to 35 million passengers annually by 2045. The first phase of the project is now open to visitors, with the second phase slated for completion by 2026. This expansion positions PDX as a forward-thinking airport, ready to meet the demands of the future while setting a new standard in sustainable airport design.
