Sharp-Nosed Teardrop Camper Transformed into Ultimate Escape Pod: A 2.0 Upgrade

The Stockman Rover 02 teardrop trailer has quickly become a standout in the world of micro-camping. Known for its rugged design and stylish appeal, this camper offers the perfect blend of comfort and durability. Whether you’re venturing off-road or seeking a cozy getaway, the Rover 02 promises a unique experience for camping enthusiasts.

In its second generation, the Rover has been upgraded with several impressive features. A major addition is the multipurpose swivel griddle, ideal for quick cooking on the go. The Redarc power distribution system offers enhanced energy management, while an integrated wine rack brings a touch of sophistication to your camping experience. Despite maintaining its rugged charm, the Rover 02 has refined its features, making it a top contender in the camper trailer market.

The Rover 02 was recently recognized at the 2024 Camper Trailer of the Year Awards, making it to the finals after a well-received update. While it didn’t win, it certainly earned praise from Camper Australia magazine, with judges lauding its build quality, fit-out, and reasonably priced nature. The kitchen layout and interior comfort were highlighted as exceptional, especially for a teardrop-style camper. However, the camper’s payload capacity was one area that stood out as a potential limitation for some reviewers.

One of the key design changes in the second-generation Rover is its fiberglass-composite construction, which gives it an even more rugged appearance. The updated earthy paint scheme removes the neon accents of the original model, opting instead for darker, more neutral tones. At the back of the trailer, the galley area has been completely revamped. The full-height hatch offers ample shade and weather protection, while the sink has been relocated to a right-hand swing-out, alongside a BBQ swing-out on the left. These changes extend the galley width for increased functionality and ease of use.

The worktop of the galley features a tilt-up design, giving you easy access to a storage compartment beneath. Here, you’ll find a 120-Ah+ lithium battery, an optional diesel water heater, and additional kitchen storage. The updated cooking setup includes a Swift grill, replacing the former Weber grill. The Swift grill features a sunken ribbed grill/griddle top that can be removed to reveal gas burners below, effectively turning it into a dual-burner stove. This unit also includes a vegetable roasting rack and works like an oven with the lid closed, offering versatile cooking options.

The Redarc control center is another notable upgrade, providing a centralized hub for monitoring and controlling key onboard systems, including lighting, fridge settings, and more. The control center even includes smartphone app capability for easy remote access.

Inside the Rover 02, the queen-size inner-spring mattress ensures a comfortable night’s sleep, while two cushioned headboards make for excellent lounging. New storage cupboards have been added above the cushions, and an optional 24-inch smart TV can be installed. For those seeking additional comfort, an optional air conditioner and diesel heater are available.

In terms of shower and awning solutions, Stockman has partnered with Darche to offer an upgraded shower tent and a 180-degree awning. The Darche drop-down shower tent is faster to deploy, and the awning provides more coverage along the trailer’s left side. For the base-level Intrepid model, an LPG hot shower system is included, while the flagship Ultra model integrates a diesel heater and shower controls on the trailer’s sidewall.

The Rover 02 comes in two configurations: the Intrepid and the Ultra. The Intrepid model starts at AU$59,990 (approx. US$37,850), while the more feature-packed Ultra model is priced at AU$74,990 (approx. US$47,300). The Ultra model includes a 200-Ah battery, 200-W solar panel, shore power hookup, and an upgraded Redarc system. Buyers can choose between the rugged XT package (ideal for off-roading) or the Super Lite kit, which is more suited to road and gravel travel.

When it comes to weight, the XT Intrepid weighs 2,778 lb (1,260 kg) and has a payload capacity of 1,190 lb (540 kg). The Super Lite version is slightly lighter at 2,558 lb (1,160 kg) and offers a 970 lb (440 kg) payload. The Ultra models have a lower payload capacity, dropping to 1,100 lb (500 kg) for the XT version and 750 lb (340 kg) for the Super Lite. While the payload might seem limited for some, the Rover’s thoughtful design, high-end features, and efficient use of space still make it a strong contender for those seeking a compact, well-equipped camper.

The Rover 02 teardrop trailer remains one of the most stylish and functional options for those looking to get off the beaten path. With its upgraded galley, advanced electrical system, and luxurious interior features, the Stockman Rover 02 continues to push the boundaries of micro-camping while maintaining its iconic ruggedness and charm. Whether you’re after a simple camping escape or an off-road adventure, this teardrop camper delivers on all fronts.
