Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has unveiled an ambitious design for the Napoli Porta Est Masterplan in Naples, Italy. This striking project features two futuristic towers with a sleek glazed and metal exterior, rising from a shared base that integrates greenery and a public plaza. Designed to maximize views of Mount Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples, the towers will be constructed using concrete and steel, ensuring both strength and aesthetic appeal.
The façade design strategically optimizes natural elements, enhancing energy efficiency and comfort. North-facing openings are maximized to invite ample natural light while minimizing direct sun exposure on other sides to reduce energy consumption. This approach not only enhances panoramic views but also improves thermal insulation, reducing glare and solar heat gain.
A key element of the masterplan is sustainability. Spanning over 30 hectares (74 acres), the project will repurpose abandoned industrial buildings, including a former tobacco factory, to revitalize eastern Naples. Extensive green roof areas will be incorporated, along with a 7,000-sq-m (75,000-sq-ft) solar panel array to reduce reliance on grid-based power. Additionally, recycled water will be used for irrigation, cutting potable water usage by approximately 60%. Geothermal energy will also play a role in the development’s eco-friendly strategy.
The Napoli Porta Est Masterplan is part of ZHA’s expanding global portfolio, which includes the Shenzhen Institute of Financial Technology skyscraper and a cutting-edge station for Saudi Arabia’s driverless transit system. Although the timeline for completion is yet to be announced, this project is set to become a landmark in Naples, blending innovative architecture with sustainable urban transformation.
